Welcome to 2016: Time to start the new year off fresh, but first things first: let’s get that 2015 tax return filed.
Start saving all the documents you get in the mail labeled “Important Tax Document” If your CPA sent out a tax organizer, read any letters or notes they included as they are your CPAs way of helping you and them have a smooth tax return process.
Write down any questions you have about your financial, retirement or tax situation as now is a good time to have your CPA review your situation and make suggestions specific to you.
If you meet with you CPA, schedule your appointment early to ensure you get a day and time that works for you. Please remember that tax preparers get pretty busy and inundated with information from many people over a fairly short period of time, so give them a break; it may take longer for them to respond to phone calls and emails. Also, at this time of year, it is best to give your preparer written correspondence as we probably need it for our files and it gives us a paper trail to use for follow up. With long voice mails, we just have to take notes of everything you said, so email, fax or write them a note first before you leave a long voice mail.
